The man behind the name
Cameron A. Morrison was born in Rockingham, North Carolina, on 5 October 1869, and rose through Democratic party politics to become the state’s fifty-fifth governor, serving from 1921 to 1925. He was later appointed to the United States Senate in 1930 to fill a vacancy, and served a single term in the House of Representatives from 1943 to 1945.
His enduring public legacy is infrastructure. In 1921 he pushed through a twenty million dollar bond issue for highway construction — an enormous sum for the period — and the thousands of miles of paved road that followed pulled a rural state into the automobile century. North Carolinians called him the Good Roads Governor, and the name stuck.
The part of the record that is not flattering
A truthful account cannot stop at highways. Morrison built his early political standing as an organizer in the Red Shirt movement during the white supremacy campaigns of 1898 and 1900, which used intimidation and violence to strip Black North Carolinians of the vote. Historians at the University of North Carolina and elsewhere have documented this plainly. The name on a Charlotte neighborhood carries that history with it, and this site states it rather than editing it out.
Building Morrocroft
In 1924 Morrison married Sara Eckerd Watts, the widow of the Durham industrialist George W. Watts. Her fortune made the estate possible. Between roughly 1925 and 1927 the couple built Morrocroft on farmland well south of what was then the edge of Charlotte — a manor house designed by the New York architect Harrie T. Lindeberg, a leading practitioner of the American country house, at the centre of a working model farm of about three thousand acres.
The name itself is usually explained as a joining of Morrison with croft, the old British word for a small enclosed field or farmstead. It was a country name for what was, at the time, genuinely countryside. The house survives and was designated a historic landmark by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission in 1979. It remains private property and is not open to visitors.
From farm to SouthPark
Morrison’s daughter Angelia married James J. Harris, and it was Harris who, after the governor’s death in 1953, directed the transformation of the land. SouthPark Mall opened on former Morrocroft acreage on 12 February 1970, developed in concert with the Belk and Ivey department store families. Everything that followed — the office towers, Phillips Place, the retail corridors along Fairview and Sharon Roads — grew outward from that decision.
